12,815. rich edison with the fox business note work joins us. let's start with a broad question. what is really at stake here? the fiscal cliff starts to take effect, as we heard from fitz, on january 1. what are we looking at as far as massive tax increases and spending cuts? >> reporter: you are talking about $500 trillion removed from the economy in taxes folks more and removing spending. the cost defense industries as tom mentioned. you have got what could equate to a drop in about a half percentage points in gross domestic product. for investors increases on capital gains. families earning $250,000 or more is what the white house wants to see for tax increases. also talking about tax increases up an down the income spectrum. nearly everyone who pays federal income taxes is going to be hit by this thing. you talked about the payroll tax cut. anyone who draws an income, pays a payroll tax, that's scheduled to go up. it reaches nearly every corner of the economy to the tune of about a half trillion dollars. this is just one year. speaking of taxes, president obama today making it cryst

. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm brian bolter. >> i'm shawn yancy. we begin with a teen-ager arrested for a brutal attack and robbery of an 81-year-old woman inside her northwest d.c. home. >> the victim is still recovering in the hospital. fox 5's maureen umeh working this one tonight now. >> neighbors say there has been an uptick in crime in the area lately but nothing as brutal as the random attack on the elderly woman. tonight police continue to patrol the area as a precaution. the burglary and beating happened wednesday afternoon inside this house surrounded by bamboo on mckinley street. an 81-year-old woman lives here alone. neighbors say she's legally blind and hard of hearing. sometime before 1:00 police say a masked burglar broke into the house through a back window. they say he punched the victim in the face and head, then took an apple computer. minutes later a mailman discovered the woman beaten and confused outside her front door. >> the person that did this is a coward. the woman is 81 years old. that's enough said. she's 81 and someone assaulted her in her own

to come to some sort of agreement on this that put us in this position. now, the nation faces recession unless lawmakers can find some sort of agreement. today n an address from the white house, the president will up the pressure on congress. without a deal to avert the so- called fiscal cliff, automatic tax increase and government spending cuts across the board would go into effect in january. the cuts would likely hit the d.c. region hardest given the large federal work force and a local economy largely built around the federal government. democrats want to let bush era tax breaks for the wealthiest americans expire while republicans prefer raising money through tax reform. leaders of both parties say they want to work together but as the president prepares to address the issue today, there is little time left. >> people making all this money have to contribute a little bit more. and all the exit polling, all the polling we've done, the vast majority of the american people support that including rich people. >> reporter: the balanced approach isn't balanced if it means highe
